Hello Spring Democrats:
If you have been reading our Letter from the Chair for a while, you know that my one note song is that I firmly believe in We the People. That We the People have the right and the obligation to be intimately involved in the governing of this Republic. That means Voting. Aaah - but, that vote needs to be counted first. We need to feel that our right to vote is protected - Congress recently extended the Voting Rights Act… although there were some Congressmen opposed. We also need to know that our vote is counted. There seems to have been a problem in some states in recent elections, most notably Florida and Ohio.
Does that mean that our system here in Harris County is safe and secure? Do we really know? The current Republican County Clerk says it is, but there have been problems in previous elections. She also says that she does not think that "paper trail" voting machines are necessary.
At our next meeting, we will have Democratic candidate for Harris County Clerk, James Goodwill Pierre, as our guest speaker. He is an active member of the legal community in Houston, has served as Texas Deputy Director of People for the American Way, Coordinator for Election Protection 2004, and District Director for Congresswoman Shelia Jackson-Lee (TX-18). He is a strong proponent of a verifiable voting system. Come hear what his plans are to make sure our votes count.
Also, our own Spring Democratic Club member and candidate for Texas House District 150, Dot Nelson-Turnier, has set up several Meet the Candidate - and other Democrats - events. Check out the Events list under "Visit Our Forums!". Dot is looking for paid campaign workers - contact her at dot@votedot.org. Chad Khan, candidate Texas House District 126, is also looking for paid campaign workers. Contact him at ckhan@vote4khan.com.
And, we are looking for two members to serve as Secretary and Treasurer. Normand and Chance have both had some changes in their work life that are going to require more of their time and they feel that they cannot give as much time to the Club as necessary to hold these positions. If you can give some of your time to the Club in either of these capacities, contact me, or Normand (secretary@springdemocraticclub.org), or Chance (treasurer@springdemocraticclub.org) for more information about the duties of these positions.
That's How It Looks - From Where I Sit,
Sue Mallott, Chair
